By now you should have received most of your IRS forms for your 2013 tax return.  However, some forms are not required to be mailed to the recipient until February 15th.

Use a Previous Tax Form

Use your 2012 tax return as a guide for gathering your tax information.  If you had an number on a line item for your 2012 return, will that line item apply to 2013?  If so, did you receive tax forms for that line?  In some instances you may not.

Ask Your CPA

Compile all tax forms receive, plus any income or deductions for which you didn’t receive tax forms.  If you received a form and you’re not sure what it is about, make a note to ask your CPA.   The more organized your tax information is the smoother the tax return preparation process will go.

Once you have most, if not all of your tax information, contact your CPA to coordinate getting your information to him or her.  Don’t wait until the last minute.  Give your CPA time to prepare your return and ask you questions.  You’ll also need time to answer any questions.
